The most important expansion of its garden was made by the 8th hereditary Prince Pei, who renamed it as Huiyuan Garden which turned out to be the most beautiful of all the gardens in princes’residences of Beijing.

In the period of the Republic of China, the residence was at first mortgaged to Xishiku Church, then in 1925, again to the University of China as its campus.
